ENGLAND

Lauren Winfield-Hill (35): Looked in fine touch on her return to England’s top order, playing one of the shots of the match on the first morning as she hit an enormous six over deep midwicket 6

Tammy Beaumont (66): The only surprise was that she didn’t go on to record a first Test hundred, having looked entirely untroubled until poking a catch to short leg 7

Heather Knight (95; 2-7 & 1-41): Deserved a second Test century and was visibly devastated to fall short on the first afternoon; often under-bowled, England’s captain did a fine job as the team’s second spinner 8

Nat Sciver (42; 1-22 & 2-21): Took some time to look her usual self with the bat, but appeared in decent fettle by the time she was trapped in front while going nicely alongside Knight; bowled well on a pitch that gave little to the seamers 6

Amy Jones (1): The country’s in-form batter ahead of this international summer, but was beaten early by a ball that spun from Sneh Rana. A couple of very difficult legside stumping chances went awry, but otherwise kept nicely 4

Sophia Dunkley (72* & 0-9): A coming-of-age week for Dunkley on her Test debut; her unbeaten half century came at a vital time with England losing wickets around her, and she has surely written herself into England’s all-format middle order for an extended run. One over of exploratory leg-spin was less successful 7

Georgia Elwiss (5; 0-8): Hard to know quite what Elwiss’ role was: a spare part as an eighth bowling option, though picked as a batter. A difficult game to make an impact in 3

Katherine Brunt (8; 1-42 & 1-49): Gave everything on a pitch that provided little in return, with her battle against Shafali Verma particularly enthralling. Her catch to dismiss the teenager – diving full length at long on – was an outrageous effort for anyone, let alone a veteran fast bowler 6

Sophie Ecclestone (17; 4-88 & 4-118): Not quite at her best but still a fine display from England’s left-arm spinner, who was lethal on the third morning and toiled for 64 overs in search of a maiden international five-wicket haul 7

Anya Shrubsole (47; 1-18 & 0-52): A tremendous cameo with the bat that took a decent score to one from which England could control the game. In her first England appearance after missing the winter through injury, she bowled nicely 5

Kate Cross (1-40 & 0-43): The pick of England’s bowlers at one stage on the second day, when Verma and Smriti Mandhana were in full flight. Fought hard on a docile surface that didn’t necessarily suit her, especially without the new ball 5

INDIA

Smriti Mandhana (78 & 8): Looked in glorious touch and played beautifully in her first innings until a poor, rash stroke opened the door for England to run through India’s middle order on the second day 7

Shafali Verma (96 & 63): A fabulous debut from a generational talent; deserved at least one hundred in the game but enhanced her already-burgeoning reputation regardless 9

Punam Raut (2 & 39): Extraordinary first innings dismissal when she padded up to a ball always destined to hit her stumps, before pulling a longhop to square leg on the final day 5

Mithali Raj (2 & 4): Abject performance from India’s captain, who appeared pretty lacklustre throughout – a disappointing personal end if this is to be her final Test appearance in England 3

Harmanpreet Kaur (4 & 8; 0-25): Trapped in front by Ecclestone’s first ball of the second day, which precipitated a lower-order collapse; her off-spin was milked easily 4

Deepti Sharma (29* & 54; 3-65): A cricketer around whom to build India’s future: a terrific all-round display only slightly marred by a rash final-day dismissal. Otherwise, this was a terrific Test debut, even if Verma stole the headlines 8

Taniya Bhatia (0 & 44*): A first innings duck as Ecclestone turned the screw, but kept well and took a fine catch to dismiss Winfield-Hill, before playing a key role in a great escape 6

Sneh Rana (2 & 80*; 4-131): A slightly leftfield pick for her first international cap in five years, but she justified the decision by bowling intelligently on the first day and then by playing a tremendous knock to defy England at the last 9

Pooja Vastrakar (12 & 12; 1-53): It took a perfect Brunt delivery to end her tail-end resistance in India’s first innings, by which point Vastrakar had already bowled admirably – the quickest of the tourists’ seamers. Her final-day dismissal was more agricultural 6

Shikha Pandey (0 & 18; 0-61): Provided Raj with less control than she would have wanted from her opening bowler, before failing to see out the evening when sent in as night-watcher. Fought hard in the second innings, playing an important initial role in partnership with Rana 5

Jhulan Goswami (1; 1-58): Bowled admirably and got through plenty of overs – deserved the wicket of Brunt when it arrived 5
