Ruthless England put finishing touches to near-perfect performance

ENGLAND

Rory Burns (61): Root made a point at the end of the match of highlighting the opening partnership, which took England past India’s first innings score and laid the foundations for a match-winning total 8

Haseeb Hameed (68): Formed a lovely stand with Burns and played beautifully all round the ground until becoming bogged down on the second morning. The wait for a maiden hundred goes on, but he looked composed at the crease and improved the tempo of England's batting 8

Dawid Malan (70): On his Test return, it was an ideal point at which to come to the crease, but he made the most of it. He was unfortunate to be caught down the legside when well set for three figures 8

Joe Root (121; 0-15): The best Test cricketer in the world on current form, seemingly breaking record after record. His hundred felt like an inevitability and he played faultlessly 9.5

Jonny Bairstow (29): Played nicely until being well caught by Kohli at slip; a solid addition to the cordon and took a blinder himself 6

Jos Buttler (7): Has never taken more catches in a Test than this, but he was uncertain with the bat in seemingly ideal circumstances for a man of his skillset 4

Moeen Ali (8; 0-4, 1-40): Bowled Shami with a beauty on the fourth morning; England look a better side with him in it 5

Sam Curran (15; 2-27, 0-40): Looked unthreatening with the ball for the most part, though found himself on a hat-trick on the first afternoon 5

Craig Overton (32; 3-14, 3-47): A terrific performance from the Somerset allrounder, who bowled beautifully on his Test return and looked accomplished with the bat at No.9 7

Ollie Robinson (0; 2-16, 5-65): Named man of the match for his second-innings spell, which settled the game as a contest; establishing himself as a key name on England’s teamsheet 8

James Anderson (0; 3-6, 1-63): Set the game up for England on the first morning and saw the back of Rahane on the fourth day for his first wicket in the second innings of a Test since February 7

INDIA

Rohit Sharma (19, 59): Looked in perfect order in both innings but couldn’t make the match-defining score that India needed 7

KL Rahul (0, 8): Worked over brilliantly by England’s bowlers, who gave him no easy boundary-balls 3

Cheteshwar Pujara (1, 91): Played tremendously on the third day and looked somewhere close to his best in taming England’s attack; his dismissal on the fourth morning triggered India’s collapse 7

Virat Kohli (7, 55): Made his highest score of the series on the fourth day and looked to be rediscovering some form; England have bowled well at him all series 5

Ajinkya Rahane (18, 10): Made starts in both innings but dismissed by the final ball before lunch on the first day and edged behind to Anderson on the last 4

Rishabh Pant (2, 1): Batting a position too high in these conditions and presented little resistance in either innings; kept well as his side toiled in the field 3

Ravindra Jadeja (4, 30; 2-88): India might have picked Ravichandran Ashwin alongside the left-arm spinner, who bowled the most overs of any Indian bowler, even after appearing to hurt himself on the first evening 5

Mohammed Shami (0, 6; 4-95): Palpably batting too high at No.8 but never stopped running in for Kohli and was India’s best seamer by a distance 6

Ishant Sharma (8*, 2; 0-92): A desperate performance from the veteran who looked weary and thoroughly out of sorts all game along 2

Jasprit Bumrah (0, 1; 2-59): Offered Kohli the most control of his whole attack and eventually cleaned up Root 5

Mohammed Siraj (3, 0; 2-86): Never stops working for his captain and was rewarded with two wickets, though he has certainly bowled better in his Test career 4
