Ben Stokes’s father, Ged, was admitted to hospital on Monday in Johannesburg after suffering what has been described in an ECB statement as “a serious illness”.

Ged, who travelled to South Africa to watch his son take part in the four-match series, remains in a critical condition.

The allrounder will not take part in England’s training session at SuperSport Park on Tuesday in order that he can be bedside with his father, a former rugby league player.

The ECB added: “The England and Wales Cricket Board, with the support of Ben and his family, request that the media and public respect Ben and his family’s privacy at this time.”
