Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has been sent for a scan after struggling with a possible left quad injury against New Zealand.

The allrounder received on-field treatment in the 29th over of his side's innings in Chennai.

He was able to continue batting, dispatching three boundaries in the next five deliveries he faced before being caught behind off the bowling of Lockie Ferguson for 40 the following over, and also bowled 10 overs in New Zealand's chase, taking 1 for 54, before leaving the field.

It was another underwhelming performance from Bangladesh's top order, with Litton Das departing for a golden duck and Tanzid Hasan falling for 16 (17) inside the powerplay.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto also fell early, reducing Bangladesh to 56 for 4, and while Shakib (40), Mushfiqur Rahim (66) and Mahmadullah (41 not out) contributed runs from the middle order, their total of 245 for 9 was under par.

Led by half-centuries from Kane Williamson, who will undergo a scan on Saturday after being struck on the thumb, and Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand cantered to victory with eight wickets and 43 balls to spare, a result which leaves Bangladesh sixth in the table, with one win from three matches.

"We didn’t bat well. If we scored at least 280, 300, it's a different ball game," said Shanto.

The batter, himself out of form, called on the top order to "bat more responsibly" at the start of the innings.

Since the start of the Asia Cup, Bangladesh have lost at least three powerplay wickets four times in 11 matches and have only navigated the opening 10 overs without losing multiple wickets on two occasions.

Players in the top four have shared two centuries, both of which came in an 89-run win over Afghanistan, and seven half-centuries in that time but have also registered 26 knocks of 20 or under.

During that period, they have won just three matches.
