Emirates Old Trafford: Australia 294-9 v England 275-9 - Australia won by 19 runs

Scorecard

Australia upset world champions England with a 19-run victory in the first one-day international at Emirates Old Trafford.

Mitchell Marsh (71) and Glenn Maxwell (77) put on 126 for the fifth wicket as the tourists put on 294 for 9 from their 50 overs.

England needed the highest score to win an ODI at Old Trafford and were quickly reduced to 13 for 2 as they fell well behind the required run-rate.

A dogged knock from Jonny Bairstow (84) gave them hope before Sam Billings (118) struck a maiden ODI century to continue his impressive summer.

Josh Hazlewood (3-26) and Adam Zampa (4-55) were a constant thorn in their side and a constant flow of wickets at both ends of the innings proved crucial to delivering the win.

The victory gives Australia a 1-0 lead in the series ahead of the second ODI as they look for revenge from their 2-1 defeat in the T20 series.

After inserting the away side, openers David Warner, via a crackerjack delivery from Jofra Archer playing his first ODI since the World Cup final, and Aaron Finch were back in the hutch inside the first 10 overs.

Adil Rashid then worked his magic and once he has got rid of Marnus Labuschagne (21) and Alex Carey (10) to leave Australia struggling on 123 for 5.

But Marsh and Maxwell were able to quell the mercurial leg-spinner and put on a risk-free 126 for the sixth wicket, combining conservative strike-rotation with some pinch-hitting

However, both departed before the final five overs and some frugal bowling at the death ensured Australia only reached 294 for 5.

Sam Billings went to his maiden England century but it was in vain

It might have required a record chase but England would have felt positive about their chances, though expectations were quickly scaled back at the visitors flew out of the traps.

Hazlewood bowled eight overs off the bat, seeing off Jason Roy (3) with a brilliant caught and bowled to set the tone.

Joe Root (1) looked short of form and when Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler soon followed off Zampa suddenly the world champions were 57 for 4 and staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat.

Bairstow fought doggedly, however, coming through the new-ball spell and setting a platform for a fine 84 from 107.

His exit from the middle all-but ended England hopes of completing what was by now an increasingly difficult chase. Bairstow and Billings put on 113 for the fifth wicket, but the former became the third victim for Zampa.

Billings continued to plow a long furrow and even went to his first international three-figure score, though even amid the cavernous surroundings in Manchester it was met with little more than a shrug given the match situation.

From clutch bowling from Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins all-but secured the win and by the time Billings was eventually dismissed off Marsh, Australia were well on their way to taking a series lead with two matches to play.
