Team Abu Dhabi may now struggle after their game against Deccan Gladiators was abandoned due to a lack of "supporting documentation" around a rain-shortened chase
Moeen Ali's Team Abu Dhabi is facing a struggle to qualify for the knockout stages of the Abu Dhabi T10 League after yesterday's game against Deccan Gladiators was called off due to an apparent lack of printing facilities at the Zayed Cricket Stadium.
After the home side had set their opponents a target of 119 to win, match referee Roshan Mahanama elected to abandon the game after a brief shower forced players off the field 2.2 overs into the league leaders' chase.
Whilst umpires and players returned to the field to resume the game with a recalculated target 16 minutes later, tournament organisers confirmed in a statement that the match could not resume due to issues distributing copies of the relevant Duckworth-Lewis-Stern calculations.
The statement read: "Rain suspended play at 21.30, with covers coming on immediately at Zayed Cricket Stadium. Match officials confirmed that play would resume at 21:46, with the view to reduce the match to five overs, implementing the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern system (DLS).
"DLS target discussions continued between team management and match officials as both teams took to the field. Supporting documentation was requested, and this was not immediately available before the scheduled 21.59 match cut-off time. The match referee subsequently decided to abandon the match."
Representatives for the tournament declined to provide further clarification regarding the situation or tournament regulations upon The Cricketer's requests for comment.
ABU DHABI T10 LEAGUE 2019: All you need to know
With a minimum of five overs being available for each innings required in order to constitute a match, the single point awarded to for an incomplete game means Team Abu Dhabi now sits fifth in the table with one game to play.
The side, led by England allrounder Moeen and World Cup-winning coach Trevor Bayliss, could now miss out on the tournament playoffs even with a victory over Karnataka Tuskers in the final group game tomorrow afternoon.
Speaking to local publication The National, Moeen said: "It is a bit frustrating but we are professional players, and I'm sure everyone throughout their career would have experienced something like this before.
"These things happen. It is not a T20, where everything is laid out for you. T10 is quite new.
"It is a great format, and maybe we can get together as players and officials and work something out better, but it is fine.
"We still have a slim chance [of playoff qualification]. Hopefully, if things go our way, we can still get through.
"I'm sure everybody is going to learn from this, and something will come up and I think we just need to work it out as a group of players and with the guys behind the scenes."
