Middlesex have confirmed that all players and the majority of coaches and staff have been furloughed, as well as announcing a range of pay cuts.

The decision to utilise the government’s coronavirus job retention scheme comes with the county conscious of protecting jobs, as well as the long-term wellbeing of the club.

All staff members, furloughed or otherwise, whose annual salary exceeds £27,500, have agreed to take a 17 per cent pay reduction, through to the end of May initially. Senior management will take a 20 per cent drop. A skeleton staff has, however, been retained to ensure that the club can continue to operate efficiently.

“We are operating in unprecedented times,” said Middlesex chief executive Richard Goatley. “We have to make difficult decisions that not only protect the future of Middlesex Cricket but the jobs of our employees.

“For all staff to agree voluntarily to a significant salary reduction for the next two months is testament to how invested they are in Middlesex Cricket and committed to helping the Club through this crisis.”

He added a message of reassurance to the club’s members and supporters, explaining that all was being done to ensure “a long and healthy future”.

Chairman Mike O’Farrell commented: "At times like this it is very heartening to see the willingness of everyone involved to be so committed to the future of the game we love.

“We will get through this together and hopefully show that the collective effort of everyone involved will enable success on and off the field at all levels and perhaps even more importantly show the wider community what Middlesex Cricket stands for."
