The World Cup clash between India and Pakistan has smashed the record for the most viewers watching a cricket stream at one time.

Disney+ Hotstar, the official streaming partner of the World Cup in India, has reported that it reached 35million concurrent viewers during the match between the two rivals.

The much-anticipated encounter ended up being a one-sided affair with India winning by seven wickets.

India put Pakistan into bat, but they could only muster 191 runs, which the hosts surpassed in 30 overs on the back of Rohit Sharma's score of 86.

The viewing figures saw a huge increase from India's opening game against Australia, which reached 26 million viewers on Disney+ Hotstar.

Contests between the two rivals are always must-see events, but the decision by the broadcaster to stream World Cup games for free on mobile devices would have helped add to the colossal numbers.

"We would like to thank all the fans who tuned in to watch the India-Pakistan match on Disney+ Hotstar," said Sajith Sivanandan, head of Disney+ Hotstar India.

“As the cricketing rivalries continue, we'll continue to honour our commitment towards delivering an unmatched viewing experience to all our users. We look forward to many more such experiences as the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup unfolds."

This follows on from the previous World Cup in 2019, which was the most watched men's ODI World Cup in history with a global average audience of 1.6billion for live coverage.

Unsurprisingly, it was the showdown between India and Pakistan then as well that drew the highest audience with 273million unique viewers tuning into the TV broadcast and a further 50million streaming online (not concurrently).

Previous iterations of the tournament have all broken records, 2015 saw Indian viewership reach 635million, including 288million that watched the group stage match between the two rivals.
