Eoin Morgan: I've never come across a sports team that has underperformed like this England team

Eoin Morgan has "never come across a sports team that has underperformed like this England team" and believes his former side are "definitely unsettled".

England arrived in India as the reigning champions, but their title defence has not gone to plan, suffering heavy defeats at the hands of New Zealand, Afghanistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. Their only points in the tournament to date came against Bangladesh, who they defeated by 137 runs in their second match.

After five matches, Jos Buttler's side sit 10th in the table, six points behind Australia, who occupy the final qualifying spot, and while they have not been mathematically eliminated from the tournament, they would need plenty of results elsewhere to go their way.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Morgan, who captained England in 2019, said: "I've never come across a sports team that has underperformed like this England team, given the level of expectation that is on their shoulders.

"There's something within the team that is definitely unsettled. The method, which they're trying to use and given the substantial nature in which they've lost the game[s], it is definitely called into question, the morale within the changing room and the confidence.

"It must be at its lowest that it's been for a considerable period of time now."

Morgan also took aim at England's selection, continuing: "They've made mistakes with selection; they've really struggled to find a balanced side and one that's effective enough to compete, never mind win this tournament.

"It's been unbelievably challenging for Jos and his team. They have to regain the confidence in the method that they've used for so long that has made them double world champions."
