Lauderhill: Canada v India - match abandoned

Rain curtailed India's final game of the T20 World Cup group stage as their match with Canada was abandoned without a ball bowled.

This is Lauderhill's third abandoned match in as many games after experiencing extreme weather which has rendered the outfield too wet for any cricket to take place.

There have been 61 centimeters of rain in the days leading up to today's contest which meant, despite not raining today, the groundstaff could not recover the outfield.

This result means India finish top of Group A with seven points while Canada registered their third World Cup point after beating Ireland earlier in the competition.

After a series of inspections, the umpires concluded that despite the weather being dry, the outfield was too soft, and a decision was made at 11:35 am local time.

The South Florida region has been on the receiving end of extreme weather including tropical storms which has caused widespread flooding and is likely to impact the remaining game at the Central Broward Stadium in Lauderhill.

While a washout is always frustrating, India may have been relieved not to risk injury ahead of the Super 8s stage on what was going to be a wet outfield.

Yesterday another washout in Florida handed USA the point they needed to qualify for the Super Eight stage from Group A, which meant 2022 T20 World Cup finalists, Pakistan, have been knocked out.

Consecutive abandonments in Florida have put the final game at the venue in doubt, with Pakistan set to take on Ireland tomorrow.

The expansion of the World Cup to 20 teams has caused several upsets including test-playing nations New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Ireland failing to qualify for the Super 8s.
