Mark Wood made no attempt to hide his frustration following England's T20 World Cup defeat against Ireland, admitting "we didn't deserve to win".

In a rain-affected encounter at the MCG, Ireland smashed 92 runs off the first 10 overs before England bounced back to bowl them out for 157 with four balls to spare. Three powerplay wickets then derailed the chase before rain stopped play just as Moeen Ali was beginning to hit his stride.

Wood picked up 3 for 34 in Ireland's innings, including the wickets of Paul Stirling and Curtis Campher, but was "angry" and "disappointed" with his performance with the ball.

Ben Stokes (1 for 8) and spinners Liam Livingstone (3 for 17) and Adil Rashid (0 for 24) were the standout performers with the ball but Chris Woakes and Sam Curran proved expensive, leaking 72 runs off six overs.

"In T20 cricket, if you don't play well then you can get punished," Wood told Test Match Special.

"It doesn't have to be the No.1 team in the world, it can be any team. We were off, they were on and they deserved to win.

"The first 10 overs with the ball we weren't at our best. I'm pretty angry and disappointed in myself. On that wicket, I think I could have bowled much better.

"If I look solely at myself, I could have been a lot more consistent and not given away as many four balls.

"Australia is now a massive game but we didn't deserve to win here."
