Dubai: Bangladesh 73, Australia 78-2 - Australia win by eight wickets

Scorecard

Bangladesh suffered another heavy defeat to bring a demoralising T20 World Cup campaign to an end, losing to Australia in double-quick time.

Mahmudullah’s side had already been bowled out for 84 by South Africa in their previous match, but they were rolled for just 73 by Aaron Finch’s men, with Adam Zampa taking five wickets after Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood had set the early tone in the powerplay.

Bangladesh were three wickets down in the third over and lost their fifth wicket in the seventh, with only Shamim Hossain (19), Mohammad Naim (17) and Mahmudullah (16) making more than six as the top order folded against quality fast bowling once again, having been decimated by Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje in their defeat against the Proteas.

Liton Das was bowled first ball by Starc, before Soumya Sarkar played on to Hazlewood in the next over. Mushfiqur Rahim was then trapped in front by Glenn Maxwell, who was introduced early to bowl his off spin.

Naim then miscued a pull to be caught at square leg, before Zampa took over: Afif Hossain edged the wrist-spinner’s first ball to Finch at slip, before Shamim was caught behind by Matthew Wade, followed next ball by Mahedi Hasan, who missed a pull shot and was given out lbw.

Bangladesh's batting failed once again

Zampa might even have had a hat-trick but for a drop from the wicketkeeper. He was not to be denied his five-wicket haul, however, claiming the scalps of Mustafizur Rahman and Shoriful Islam in the same over to dismiss Bangladesh with 30 balls still remaining.

Australia chased the runs without much alarm, aware that completing the job in 8.2 overs would take their net run rate above South Africa’s – a vital detail ahead of the final round of games in the group. They inflicted the most expensive powerplay of the tournament on Bangladesh to ensure they took that chance, finishing the job with 82 balls to spare.

Aaron Finch smashed 40 off just 20 balls, with David Warner making 18. Mitchell Marsh put the finishing touches to a dominant display with a huge six.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, began the tournament as the sixth-ranked team in the ICC rankings but have fallen to ninth.
