Australian allrounder Glenn Maxwell has signed for Lancashire ahead the 2020 T20 Blast.
The 31-year-old will play in at least the first eight games for the county, before joining up with his national side for their limited-over series against England.
Maxwell returns to the club, having starred during the 2019 campaign as Lancashire won the North Group, only to lose out to eventual winners Essex in the quarter-finals.
He will feature in five home games, beginning with a clash against Northamptonshire on May 29.
During a stint that saw him named as the county’s T20 player of the year, he struck a half-century on his Vitality Blast bow, finishing the campaign with a haul of 305 runs at an average of 38.12
Maxwell captained Melbourne Stars to the Big Bash final in February, only to be beaten by Sydney Sixers in a rain-affected final, while he will play for Kings XI Punjab in the upcoming Indian Premier League. He will represent London Spirit in the inaugural edition of The Hundred, playing alongside Eoin Morgan.
Maxwell said of his decision to re-join Lancashire: “We were very unfortunate not to progress further after dominating the North Group and I was so impressed with the talent inside the changing room. I’m very confident we can improve on the quarter-final finish of 2019.
“I have been keeping in touch with the lads ever since I departed in September and I’m already excited to catch up with everyone when I arrive in May.”
Lancashire director of cricket Paul Allott added: “Glenn is one of the most sought after players in world cricket and to have signed him again after the enormous impact he made last year is hugely significant as we go in search of a second Vitality Blast title.
“To have a player of his talent on the pitch, as well as the person he is away from the field, can only enhance our prospects in this year’s tournament. He is extremely generous with his time in passing on his experiences to younger players and will no doubt play a huge part in their development once again.
“He firmly embraced himself in the culture of Lancashire Cricket last year, understood the pride in pulling on the Red Rose and we can’t wait to welcome him back to Emirates Old Trafford.”
