Kia Talking Points: Swing and nip, one-handed catch and an appeal mishap

The Cricketer looks at the main talking points from the Women's One Day Cup game between Surrey and Lancashire at the Kia Oval

Movement That Inspires play of the day

It was a solid day with both bat and ball for Lancashire's Grace Johnson.

But, perhaps, the moment of the game came with ball in hand as the 21-year-old bowled Alice Monaghan with a beautiful delivery.

After a strong start with Surrey, Lancashire struck three times for the cost of just five runs.

The third of which came when Johnson, playing just her second match of the season, hit the top of Monaghan's off stump.

Johnson, who was brought into the attack at first change to replace Tara Norris from the Pavilion End, produced a delivery that swung in through the air before it nipped away off the pitch.

There was very little Surrey's aggressive opener could have done to keep it out.

Take The Lead, Drive Electric moment of the day

This Surrey side pride themselves on their fielding.

And, it is fair to suggest, that for part of their One Day Cup game against Lancashire, they were not at their best. Their ground fielding, including some fumbles, cost them runs.

But there was a moment of magic, too, delivered by Paige Scholfield.

Johnson, who had reached her highest score for Lancashire, aimed an aggressive shot into the leg side towards the shorter boundary off Monaghan.

As it flew towards the boundary, the Surrey batter, running back from mid-wicket, plucked it out of the air, one-handed.

It elicited a hand-over-the-mouth reaction - à la Stuart Broad at Trent Bridge in the 2015 Ashes - from the bowler as Scholfield was mobbed by her teammates.

The catch inspired Surrey to a well-controlled final 10 overs, in which Lancashire were only able to reach 246 for 9 by the end of their innings.

Kira Chathli's appeal to no one

There was an amusing moment during Surrey's bowling innings when Kira Chathli found herself appealing to no one.

The Surrey captain, back at her county after being released from England's one-day international squad, was convinced she had Fi Morris stumped off the bowling of Dani Gregory.

So, as you do, she turned to square leg to appeal, only to find that the umpire was on the other side, owing to the left-handed Eve Jones being at the other end.

Mid-appeal, she turned around to find the umpire's finger raised for Surrey's fourth wicket.

It was the result of both smart work from the wicketkeeper and excellent bowling from Gregory, who gave it some air to defeat the right-handed batter in the flight.

A late re-adjustment from Morris had saved her from suffering the fate a few balls earlier in the over. She was helpless this time, despite a valiant effort to get her bat back in time.
