Hyderabad: Kolkata Knight Riders 171-9, Sunrisers Hyderabad 166-8 - Kolkata Knight Riders win by five runs

Sunrisers Hyderabad squandered the chance for a rare win in this year's Indian Premier League as they failed to close out a run-chase against Kolkata Knight Riders that had looked to be in their control.

Needing 10 runs to win off the final eight deliveries of the match, Sunrisers somehow fell six runs short, losing by five.

Hyderabad had recovered from the perilous position of 54 for 4 in the seventh over – with Harry Brook falling without scoring – to be 124 for 4 with six overs remaining and 48 runs required, but Heinrich Klaasen departed for a 20-ball 36 and the house of cards tumbled as KKR completed an unlikely heist.

Captain Aiden Markram (41) fell two overs later, but Sunrisers still looked well placed for a victory that would have brought them level on points with Kolkata, who are eighth.

Somehow, though, they let that opportunity slip, with Varun Chakravarthy the hero for Knight Riders. The off-spinner bowled the twentieth over and held his nerve, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar unable to hit the last ball of the match for the six required for the win.

Earlier, Nitish Rana (42) and Rinku Singh (46) had led from the front for KKR, who themselves recovered from 35 for 3 in the fifth over to reach 171 for 9.

Left-armers Marco Jansen and T Natarajan claimed two wickets apiece for Sunrisers, who were left to rue a chance missed.
