Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the rest of the Indian Premier League season through injury.

Steyn, who replaced Nathan Coulter-Nile at Royal Challengers Bangalore, has suffered inflammation of his shoulder and will not take any further part in RCB's resurgent campaign.

The South African had only played in two matches for Bangalore, claiming two wickets against both Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings.

"His presence has helped the team immensely and we are very thankful for the inspiration and passion that he brought to the squad," an RCB statement read.

"The team will deeply miss his energy and presence around. We wish him a speedy recovery and all the luck for all future endeavours."

RCB will not be permitted to seek an overseas replacement for Steyn given the IPL season has already passed its halfway point.

The injury, meanwhile, will come as some concern to South Africa, exactly six weeks from their opening World Cup game against England at the Oval.

Steyn has been included in the Proteas' preliminary 15-man squad for the tournament. He is now due to fly back to South Africa for medical assessment.
