Jos Buttler scored a century as Rajasthan Royals defeated Mumbai Indians by 23 runs in Pune to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2022 IPL.

The England opener scored 100 runs off 68 balls, including 11 fours and five sixes – the first century of the tournament, his second in Royals pink, and the third of his T20 career.

He lost two partners early on, with Yashavi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal departing inside the powerplay, before putting on 82 runs off 50 balls with captain Sanju Samson for the third wicket.

Following Samson's dismissal in the 15th over (caught Tilak Varma, bowled Kieron Pollard), he added a further 53 runs with Shimron Hetmyer – the West Indian doing the heavy lifting with 35 runs off 14.

Jasprit Bumrah (3 for 17) removed both players in the penultimate over and Tymal Mills (3 for 35) dismissed Navdeep Saini and Riyan Parag in the 20th as Rajasthan closed on 193 for 8.

In reply, Mumbai Indians constructed an almost identical innings for the first 13 overs, losing two wickets inside the powerplay before a productive third-wicket stand between Ishan Kishan and Varma. Together, they added 81 runs off 54 balls to propel their side to 121 for 2.

However, following Kishan's dismissal at the end of the 13th over, Mumbai lost four wickets for just 15 runs to collapse to 136 for 6 and destroy their chances of chasing down the total.

Varma top-scored for Mumbai, blasting 61 runs off 33 balls, while Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of Rajasthan's bowlers, taking 2 for 26.
