When does the IPL auction start?

The player auction for the 2024 Indian Premier League, the 17th edition of the competition, will be held on December 19, 2023, in Dubai.

Names of teams

For a third campaign in a row, there will be 10 IPL teams: Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Lucknow Super Giants, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Punjab Kings.

Who is up for auction?

According to BCCI, a total of 333 players are submitted for the 2024 IPL auction, of which 214 are Indian, while the other 119 are from overseas.

Since this is a mini-auction, most teams are looking to fill the remaining gaps in their squad rather than completely remodel their roster, following the retentions that were announced by all 10 teams on November 26.

How the auction works

The 333 players that have registered for the auction so far are placed into three categories – Indian capped, Indian uncapped, and overseas players, and then grouped again for the auction itself.

Categories are based on a player's chief role in the team: batters, all-rounders, wicketkeepers, spinners, and fast bowlers.

The process sees players enter the auction at a base price and teams take turns submitting offers until no further bids are forthcoming.

Unsold players can re-enter the draft during the final rounds should the franchises submit a request for their re-submission.

Notable missing players

A trio of England players lead the list of those not entered into the auction. Ben Stokes and Joe Root had confirmed their decision not to participate prior to the retain deadline in an effort to manage their schedules during 2024.

Jofra Archer, who has been sidelined with an elbow problem for much of the year, will also miss the competition after being let go by Mumbai Indians.

Closer to home, Kedar Jadhav, who has 1,208 IPL runs in 95 matches, is missing from the long-list. As is Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das, who withdrew from last year competition to play for Bangladesh against Ireland and was subsequently let go by KKR.

Twenty-two players have entered themselves into the top bracket for the auction: six batters, eight all-rounders, two wicketkeepers, five seamers and two spinners.

The group is led by Mitchell Starc, who is bidding for a deal eight years since last playing in the franchise competition. He had a brief stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore and was signed by Kolkata Knight Rides but was ruled out by injury.

There is the possibility of the left-arm seamer setting a new record for an Australian player, currently held by Cameroon Green at 17.5 crore (£1.75m).

His Australia captain Pat Cummins is also priced in the top category, himself returning to the competition after skipping the 2023 event ahead of the Ashes and Cricket World Cup.

The batting group is led by Travis Head, player of the match in the World Cup final, countryman Steve Smith and Harry Brook - released by Sunrisers Hyderabad having been signed for 13.2 crore (£1.3m) in the auction.

South Africa seamer Gerald Coetzee is bidding for his first IPL contract, as is Hampshire captain James Vince and Jamie Overton, the Surrey bowling allrounder.

There are three Indians in the top bracket: Harshal Patel (let go by Royal Challengers Bangalore, Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav, the latter of whom were released by KKR in the off-season.

English Interest

As many as 25 English players have entered the auction, many of whom are seeking their first contracts in the competitions.

Phil Salt, Adil Rashid, David Willey and Brook will be bidding to win deals after being released after the 2023 competition.

Meanwhile, George Scrimshaw, Luke Wood, Ollie Robinson, Richard Gleeson, Gus Atkinson and Olly Stone, none of whom have played IPL cricket previously, will be hoping to capitalise on the desire to add depth to the fast-bowling department.

List of all English players registered for the 2024 IPL auction: Harry Brook, Chris Woakes, Phil Salt, Adil Rashid, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Sam Hain, James Vince, Rehan Ahmed, Brydon Carse, Tom Curran, George Garton, Jamie Overton, David Willey, Sam Billings, Ben Duckett, Gus Atkinson, Richard Gleeson, Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, Ollie Robinson, George Scrimshaw, Olly Stone, Luke Wood, Benny Howell, Chris Wood

Where can I watch the IPL auction?

The auction can be watched on the Star Sports Network or live-streamed on Disney+ Hotstar and is expected to commence at 1pm local time in Dubai, which equates to 2.30pm IST or 9am GMT.
