Glenn Maxwell is taking an indefinite break from the 2024 Indian Premier League to prioritise his physical and mental health.

The Australia allrounder is usually a reliable performer in the IPL – he has scored over 2,500 runs and has a strike rate above 150 in the competition – but has struggled for form for Royal Challengers Bengaluru this season.

With the bat, he has scored 32 runs in six innings, including being dismissed for three ducks while with the ball, he has four wickets with an economy of 8.44 to show for his nine overs.

Maxwell did not feature in Monday's (April 15) 25-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, having asked the team's management to not consider him for selection.

He didn't put a timeline on his return to action but indicated he may feature later in the season.

"For me, personally, it was a pretty easy decision," Maxwell said. "I went to [captain] Faf du Plessis and the coaches after the last game and said I felt it was probably time we tried someone else.

"I have been in this situation in the past where you can keep playing and get yourself deeper into a hole.

"I don't think I've had a better six months in cricket leading into this tournament, so it's frustrating when it ends up like this. T20 cricket can be like that sometimes – it's a pretty fickle game.

"I felt like I wasn't contributing in a positive way with the bat, and with the results and the position we find ourselves on the table, it's a good time to give someone else an opportunity.

"If I can get my body and my mind right, there's no reason I can't finish the tournament well if I do get another opportunity."
