David Warner will replace Rishabh Pant as Delhi Capitals captain for the 2023 IPL.

Pant was involved in a serious car crash in December 2022, sustaining head, back and leg injuries, and will not take part in this season's IPL. According to the Capitals, he is still "undergoing rehab and recovery".

The wicketkeeper-batter delivered an update on his recovery on social media on March 15, posting a video of himself walking in a swimming pool with the aid of a walking stick.

Police said the India international "dozed off" while driving and lost control of his car, causing it to flip twice and catch on fire.

Pant, who replaced Shreyas Iyer as captain in 2021, will be hugely missed by Delhi Capitals. An explosive batter, he scored 340 runs at a strike rate of 151.78 in 2022 and has scored over 2,800 runs at 34.60 across his entire IPL career.

Veteran Australia international Warner was bought by the Capitals in 2022 and topped the run-scoring charts for the franchise in his debut season, scoring 432 runs at a strike rate of 150.52.

Warner has previously captained Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, winning 35 of his 67 matches at the helm.

Commenting on replacing Pant, Warner said: "Rishabh has been a terrific leader for Delhi Capitals, and we're all going to miss having him around.

"I would like to thank the management for the faith and trust they've always shown in me."

Delhi Capitals will begin their 2023 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1.
