Gujarat were 16 for 3 and then 87 for 5, with Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar both falling without scoring inside the first nine balls of the run-chase, but the South African smashed 94 off 51 balls
David Miller played a remarkable knock, helped by a cameo from Rashid Khan, to drag Gujarat Titans to an improbable victory over Chennai Super Kings.
Gujarat were 16 for 3 and then 87 for 5, with Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar both falling without scoring inside the first nine balls of the run-chase, but the South African – representing his third Indian Premier League franchise – hammered 94 off just 51 balls to complete a thrilling win with a ball to spare.
Chennai looked to have enough runs after reaching 169 for 5, having been asked by Khan, standing in as captain for Hardik Pandya, to bat first. Ruturaj Gaikwad made 73 at the top of the order, before Ambati Rayudu added 46 and Ravindra Jadeja, at the crease ahead of MS Dhoni, provided late impetus with 22 off 12 deliveries.
Moeen Ali fell for just a single: one of two wickets for Alzarri Joseph, who was playing in his first game of the tournament.
Titans' response never appeared to get going: Wriddhiman Saha faced 18 balls for 11, while Gill went first ball and Shankar to his second.

But somehow, even after Abhinav Manohar went shortly afterwards, Miller found a way. He hit six sixes along with eight fours, with support from his teammates almost completely non-existent.
But when Rahul Tewatia became the first of three victims for Dwayne Bravo, who also squeezed a maiden into four excellent overs, Khan entered the fray at No.7 and smashed 40 off just 21 balls to provide his overseas partner with a moment's respite.
That stand lasted until the fifth ball of the penultimate over, at which point Rashid departed to be followed a delivery later by Joseph.
But Miller remained ever-present, putting the finishing touches to an unlikely victory by taking Chris Jordan for a six and a boundary, either side of a no-ball for height that was caught at short third man.
