The national governing body for Indian cricket still hopes to hold the Indian Premier League on home soil this year and will only look abroad in the case of a last resort.
The competition, now in its 13th year, was due to get underway on March 29 but has been postponed indefinitely ever since, with the world continuing to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates have both submitted offers to assist organisers by hosting the tournament, but BCCI treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal insists that there remains a hope that the event could be staged in India.
“We’ve to consider India first and then think of overseas,” he told Reuters. “They have sent these proposals in case we want to organise it there.
“We will discuss it in the next IPL governing council meeting where we will take a call. Everybody is under the pressure because of the uncertainty.”
The IPL has previously been staged overseas – South Africa did the honours in 2009 when the dates coincided with India’s elections.
It is anticipated that the T20 World Cup will be officially postponed this week, a development that would open up a possible slot for the lucrative competition to take place in the autumn.
