Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings has conceded that plans for the T20 World Cup in October look "unrealistic".

Sixteen teams are scheduled to travel to Australia in October for the tournament but, given the impact of the global coronavirus pandemic, the viability of the competition remains in serious doubt.

No formal decision has yet been taken on whether to postpone or cancel the event, but at a press conference on Tuesday, Eddings admitted that the outlook is not positive.

"While it hasn't been formally called off this year, or postponed, trying to get 16 countries into Australia in the current world, where most countries are still going through Covid-19 spiking, I think it's unrealistic, or it's going to be very, very difficult," he said.

"The ICC are having meetings as we speak, it's a bit of a movable feast at the moment."

A combination of international travel restrictions and social distancing measures are causing organisers headaches, with Cricket Australia having pitched several options to the ICC.

A decision from the global governing body is expected next month, T20 World Cup chief executive Nick Hockley said.

"We've got a fantastic local organising committee who are busy preparing for every eventuality and the decision that will come," he said.

One option for the ICC is to push the tournament into 2021, and the T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in India next year back a further 12 months.

That would free up space in the calendar in October for the Indian Premier League to move its postponed season.
