England succumb to spin once more as Ashwin-Axar axis secures series win
Scorecard: India v England

ENGLAND

Dom Sibley (2 & 3): Five runs in the match and undone by Axar on both occasions 2

Zak Crawley (9 & 5): Caught while attacking on the first morning – one of seven dismissals to left-arm spin this winter. Edged a good one from Ashwin in his final knock 2

Jonny Bairstow (28 & 0): Battled hard in the first innings before a marginal lbw decision; second innings duck was his sixth in nine innings against India and his third in four on this tour 3

Joe Root (5 & 30; 0-56): A quiet end to the series for England’s captain, who looked understandably knackered 4

Ben Stokes (55 & 2; 4-89): Genuinely brilliant spell of bowling while fighting a stomach bug and sweltering heat; couldn’t go on after making a first-innings half-century 7

Ollie Pope (29 & 15): Battled hard in both innings as he looked to find a way against Ashwin 4

Dan Lawrence (46 & 50): Back in the side at No.7 and England’s most accomplished batsman in the game 7

Ben Foakes (1 & 13): Struggled with the bat but kept valiantly 4

Dom Bess (3 & 2; 0-71): A difficult Test for Bess on his return, struggling for consistency at the end of a challenging winter for the young off-spinner 2

Jack Leach (7 & 2; 2-89): Bowled far better than his figures suggested 5

James Anderson (10* & 1; 3-44): A champion bowler whose performance, especially in the first half of the second day, was absolutely world-class 7

Cheteshwar Pujara (17): Troubled by Leach throughout the series and trapped in front on the second morning 3

Virat Kohli (0): Quiet series with the bat for India’s captain, who edged a good delivery from Stokes 2

Ajinkya Rahane (27): Not at his most fluent, but put together an important partnership with Rohit 4

Rishabh Pant (101): Amazing hundred that changed the game; kept brilliantly 9.5

Ravichandran Ashwin (13; 3-47 & 5-47): Man of the series for his 32 wickets, eight of which came in dismantling England one final time 9

Washington Sundar (96*; 1-14 & 0-16): Left four runs short of a hundred when he ran out of partners 8

Axar Patel (43; 4-68 & 5-48): Nine wickets in the match as the left-arm spinner ended a fantastic maiden series on a high 9

Ishant Sharma (0; 0-23): Had little to do across the three days 3

Mohammed Siraj (0; 2-45 & 0-12): Exploited the assistance for seam bowling on the first morning and picked up two key wickets 5
