Scorecard

ENGLAND

Jonny Bairstow (43): Kept well but spilt a run-out chance which should have been completed. Superb with the bat to get England off to a good start, hitting six fours and a maximum. 7

Liam Livingstone (9): Missed a real opportunity to impress in his favoured position. Unnecessarily went after Sri Lanka's new-ball bowlers and was eventually snared by Chamika Karunaratne. 2

Joe Root (79*): A much-needed return to form for his country with his best white-ball knock since last summer. Has reached at least the half-century landmark 50 times in this format. One of England's best. 8

Eoin Morgan (6): Won't have been impressed with the lapse in concentration towards the end of the Sri Lanka innings. Continued a poor run of scores, edging behind a fine ball from Dushmantha Chameera. 4

Sam Billings (3): Another excellent run out to finish off a Sri Lanka innings which should have been ended earlier. Bit of a wild shot to get out in single figures. 4

Moeen Ali (28 & 1-5): A useful two-over spell with the ball. Survived being dropped first ball but got some much-needed time out in the middle on a rare outing. 6

Chris Woakes (DNB & 4-18): Brilliantly economical, using variation out of the hand to maximum advantage and keeping a tight collar on the top order. 9.5

Sam Curran (9* & 0-45): Went at over a run a ball. Perhaps not the conditions to best suit him, though the regular short balls did shake up batsmen on occasion. 5

Adil Rashid (DNB & 0-45): An expensive six overs for the legspinner, who wasn't quite at his best, though was well played by the Sri Lankan batsmen. 4

David Willey (DNB & 3-44): A fine showing from a man who is slowly reestablishing himself in England's white-ball side. Made inroads at the top, and returned to whittle through the lower order. Left-arm variation is important for his side. 7.5

Mark Wood (DNB & 0-19): Economical with the ball across his seven overs, without claiming a wicket. Got up good speed. 6.5

SRI LANKA

Kusal Perera (73): A curious powerplay, in which he only faced 16 balls but made 32, gave way to a slightly more considered innings. Without him, Sri Lanka may have been looking at a very paltry total. Who knows what would have happened had he clung on to Moeen Ali. 7.5

Pathum Nissaka (5): Struggled to get away, pinned down by Woakes before being dismissed by the Warwickshire allrounder, chipping a tame pull to midwicket. 2

Charith Asalanka (0): Got a decent delivery from Willey, just short of a length and six inches outside off stump, and couldn't help himself having a nibble. Debut duck. 2

Dasun Shanaka (1): Never looked comfortable during his eight-ball stay, and promptly nicked Woakes through to Bairstow. 2

Wanindu Hasaranga (54 & 0-26): Useful contribution in the middle order, when Sri Lanka looked like toppling over. Couldn't be a threat with the ball with so few runs behind him. 7

Dhananjaya Lakshan (2 & 0-12): Another to be undone by Woakes, just short of a length, trying to punch through the offside. No shame in falling to the nicest man in cricket in this instance. 2

Ramesh Mendis (1): Fell cheaply, trapped lbw by Moeen trying to work the ball to leg. Ball-tracking showed the delivery destined to flick leg stump. 2

Chamika Karunaratne (19 & 1-39): A somewhat defiant knock towards the end of the innings, though his running left a lot to be desired. 5

Binura Fernando (2 & 1-50): Got himself into a horrible position to chip a catch to Moeen at midwicket off Willey, having spent the previous two overs desperately avoiding multiple run-out chances.

Dushmantha Chameera (7 & 3-50): Emerging as Sri Lanka's best player of the tour. Took his haul to nine wickets with the key dismissals of Morgan and Billings to give the tourists hope. Probably over bowled due to the search for breakthroughs. 8

Praveen Jayawickrama (4 & 0-7): Run out by a superb throw from Billings and given just the one over with the ball. Thanks for coming. 3
