Twenty-eight overs earlier, Ajaz Patel had been settling down to watch New Zealand's opening batters in action, having just made history as the first player to claim the first 10 wickets to fall in a Test match.

At 62 for 9, however, the left-arm spinner was back out in the middle, powerless as the tourists – missing captain Kane Williamson – crumbled to the lowest Test score against India, and their sixth-lowest of all time. Two balls later, the Blackcaps were all out.

Only Kyle Jamieson (17) and Tom Latham (10) reached double figures. No one survived as many deliveries as Jamieson, the giant seamer, who lasted 36 balls before succumbing to Axar Patel to end the innings.

In keeping with the earlier effort from Patel, who was born in Mumbai and returned figures of 10 for 119, Mohammed Siraj then took the first three wickets to fall in New Zealand's response. Ravichandran Ashwin then took over, claiming four wickets in eight overs, while Axar and Jayant Yadav shared the three other wickets to fall.

Patel, fittingly, was the not-out batter. New Zealand's total, 62, was their lowest in Tests for eight years, when they were bowled out for 68 at Lord's against England. It was also the seventh time this century they had failed to reach the hundred mark.

Ajaz Patel dismissed Mohammed Siraj to complete his 10-wicket haul

Anil Kumble was the last man to complete a 10-wicket innings in Tests, against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999, though Jim Laker has the best figures in Test history, with 10 for 53 against Australia at Old Trafford in 1956.

The feat is perhaps the sport's hardest to complete, with fewer than 100 recorded instances at the top levels of the game.

Patel, 33, is playing in his 11th Test match. His previous best innings return had stood at 5 for 59.

Having emigrated from India to New Zealand in 1996, he became the fifth man of Indian origin to play international cricket for the Blackcaps when he made his Test debut against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi three years ago.
