Tamim Iqbal to miss New Zealand T20s

Colin de Grandhomme out for up to eight weeks following ankle surgery

What is it?

A three-match ODI series between New Zealand and Bangladesh

When is it?

The first ODI begins on March 20th in New Zealand (March 19th in England). The full schedule is below.

First ODI: March 19th – 20th (11 am Local time, 10 pm GMT)

Second ODI: March 23rd (2 pm Local time, 1 am GMT)

Third ODI: 25th – 26th March (11 am Local time, 10 pm GMT)

Where is it?

Each game in the ODI series between New Zealand and Bangladesh will have a different venue, with a full house likely to be in attendance.

The first match will be held at University Oval, Dunedin, with the second taking place at Hagley Oval, Christchurch and the final game commencing at Basin Reserve, Wellington.

It will be the first time the Bangladesh side has toured New Zealand since they narrowly escaped the mosque shooting in Christchurch in the March of 2019.

Who's involved?

Both countries have named their squads for the series, with some notable absentees for both parties.

For the hosts, captain and star batsman Kane Williamson will miss the series with an elbow injury. This leaves Tom Latham in charge to take on the role as captain whilst potentially paving the way for Devon Conway to fill the run-scoring void left by Williamson's absence.

The Johannesburg-born opener has been in great form domestically and internationally, culminating in a match-winning 99 not out in the recent T20I series against Australia. The opener averages close to 45 in domestic List A cricket and, at 29, certainly bided his time for the opportunity.

Bangladesh will be without their talismanic allrounder Shakib Al Hasan

In other news, Ross Taylor will miss the first ODI because of a hamstring injury. Former Hong Kong international Mark Chapman has been called up as cover, with the 26-year-old last playing an ODI in February last year against India.

Although having not yet hit the heights many would have expected for New Zealand, Chapman does average 51 in List A cricket and has been a part of the sides recent T20I series victory over Australia.

The touring party have key absentee themselves. Allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has been granted paternity leave for the entirety of the trip. Hasan played a crucial role in the Tigers recent ODI clean sweep of the West Indies, averaging 56.5 with the bat whilst picking up six wickets at an economy of 2.19 over the three matches.

Allrounder Mosaddek Hossain has been called up, having not played an ODI for the Tigers since 2019. After good performances domestically with the ball and his talent with the bat, he could be entrusted with filling in for Shakib as the allrounder.

New Zealand: Tom Latham (C & WK), Martin Guptill, Mark Chapman (Cover for Ross Taylor), Trent Boult, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Tim Southee, Will Young, Ross Taylor

Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal (C), Mosaddek Hossain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Mohammad Mithun, Liton Das, Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Soumya Sarkar, Naim Sheikh, Taskin Ahmed, Al Amin Hossain, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mustafizur Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Rubel Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed

What are the odds?

Dafabet makes New Zealand heavy favourites going the first match at 1/8. Bangladesh will have their work cut out, with the hosts having not lost an ODI match at University Oval, Dunedin, from the nine that they have previously played at this venue.

When it comes to run-scorers, Henry Nicholls is currently at 3/1 to be the highest run-scorer of the match, fresh off his domestic exploits. He scored an unbeaten 127 for Canterbury against Northern Districts in the most recent 50-over match for his province.

If six-hitting is what you like to put your money on, this could be your game. Odds of 23/20 for over 7.5 New Zealand sixes could be appealing considering the Kiwis last ODI at this ground was against Bangladesh, where they hit nine maximums on their way to 330 for 6.

What does it mean?

Kane Williamson is an injury absentee

The series is seen as good preparation in the 50-over World Cup cycle, with the next event scheduled for India in 2023. The series will be the start of New Zealand's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League journey, one in which the Tigers currently sit in second place due to their recent clean sweep over the West Indies.

The new format aims to add more emphasis on bilateral series between nations, with every game being played for points, effecting the overall standings.

This is now of greater importance, with the top seven teams after the two-year cycle of matches automatically qualifying for the 2023 World Cup. The remaining five nations will playoff with the other competitions' best teams to determine who grabs the tournament’s final three places.

Will fans be permitted?

Yes. It feels good to say that fans will be in full attendance at each of the three venues.

Where can I follow it?

BT Sport is broadcasting the series across their network in the United Kingdom, with viewers able to access and watch the tour on their website also.

Spark Sport is broadcasting the series in New Zealand.

Gazi TV will show the three games for fans in Bangladesh.

In India, the series will be available through the FanCode streaming service.

The matches will be shown by Supersport in South Africa. In the United States, ESPN+ have the rights.
