Tristan Stubbs and Marco Jansen are among the new additions to an expanded set of players centrally contracted by Cricket South Africa for the 2023/24 season.

Twenty players – rather than 16, as previously – have been rewarded, with Janneman Malan, Andile Phehlukwayo and Dwaine Pretorius, who has retired from international cricket, the three men who have been knocked off the list.

Left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin, seamer Sisanda Magala – who recently played his first international match for a year – and wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton are other new beneficiaries, alongside Stubbs and Jansen.

Heinrich Klaasen, who is the incumbent Test wicketkeeper, has kept his contract after regaining it having originally missed out 12 months ago, while Wayne Parnell is back for the first time since returning to the fold after a spell with Kolpak status.

"We are really excited by the mix of experienced and younger players that have been contracted this season as we continue to build a world-class outfit under the leadership of red and white-ball head coaches Shukri Conrad and Rob Walter," said CSA chief executive Pholetsi Moseki.

CSA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe added: "We look forward to seeing them compete at the highest level in what is an important next 12 months for the limited-overs and Test sides, with the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup taking place later this year as well as the start of the new World Test Championship cycle."

Quinton de Kock has retired from Test cricket so is only a white-ball player, while David Miller has never played a Test match and last featured in a first-class fixture in 2018. By contrast, Keegan Petersen has never made a limited-over appearance for the Proteas; Dean Elgar last played an ODI five years ago.

Tony de Zorzi, currently involved in his first international series against West Indies, is not on the contract list, nor are allrounder Wiaan Mulder, spinner Simon Harmer and seamer Gerald Coetzee, who all feature in Temba Bavuma's Test team.

South Africa central contracts: Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Dean Elgar, Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, Marco Jansen, Sisanda Magala, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Wayne Parnell, Keegan Petersen, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs, Rassie van der Dussen
