Jasprit Bumrah brilliance condemns England to heavy defeat

Bumrah took six wickets in just 7.2 overs as Jos Buttler's side were bundled out in double-quick time

England were comprehensively trounced at the Kia Oval by India, who were inspired by Jasprit Bumrah who took six wickets as the hosts were bowled out in just over half their allotted overs.

Bumrah, who captained India in the Test between the sides earlier this month, ripped through England's top order, reducing them to 17 for 4 in the sixth over and 26 for 5 in the eighth, taking advantage of conditions that saw the white ball swing and seam from the outset.

He returned to clean up the tail as Jos Buttler's side – who at one point were in danger of falling to their lowest ODI total in Buttler's first home ODI as Eoin Morgan's successor – fell woefully short of a competitive total in south London in their second-shortest completed 50-over innings of all time.

Jason Roy, Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Liam Livingstone all fell without scoring, with only Buttler (30) and David Willey (21) passing 15.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field, and his bowlers vindicated that decision immediately. The second over – bowled by Bumrah – was a double-wicket maiden, and Stokes – in his first limited-over match of the summer – went first ball to Mohammed Shami, who also accounted for Buttler and Craig Overton.

Moeen Ali was caught and bowled by Prasidh Krishna for his solitary wicket, with Yuzvendra Chahal required for just two overs of leg-spin.

Willey and Brydon Carse took England beyond their lowest 50-over total – achieved 21 years ago against Australia – but not much further. Willey was the last man out, typically to Bumrah, bowled around his legs.

India needed little time to knock off the runs in reply, coming through the powerplay unscathed as Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan made light work of England's earlier strife, completing the win in just 18.4 overs, ensuring the match lasted only 44 overs.
