India head coach Rahul Dravid has committed to a contract extension after his initial deal expired at the end of the 50-over World Cup.

It seemed inevitable that Dravid would lead his country to a second world title on home soil in the last 12 years, but they fell at the final hurdle against Australia.

Nonetheless, under the former batter, India have been relentless and won all 10 games in the group stage and semi-final before succumbing to Travis Head's century in Ahmedabad.

No timeframe has been confirmed for Dravid's extension, but it is anticipated that it will at least run through to the end of the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and United States next summer.

"The last two years with Team India have been thoroughly memorable," said Dravid. "Together, we have witnessed highs and lows and throughout this journey, the support and camaraderie within the group have been phenomenal.

"I am genuinely proud of the culture we have set in the dressing room. As we embrace new challenges post the World Cup, we remain committed to the pursuit of excellence."

India have become the world's top-ranked team across all formats under Dravid but remain without a world title since MS Dhoni led his country to World Cup glory in 2011.

They are in the middle of a T20I series against Australia presently, before travelling to South Africa for a three-format tour in December and January. They host England for five Tests thereafter.
