India have been docked two World Test Championship points, shunting them to sixth in the table, for their slow over rate in their defeat by South Africa.

South Africa won inside three days at Centurion, with Dean Elgar starring in his penultimate Test appearance. Kagiso Rabada in particular was excellent with the ball.

India were ruled to be two overs short of their target after relevant time allowances, and they were also docked 10 per cent of their match fee.

Rohit Sharma pled guilty to the offence and accepted the sanction, with players fined five per cent of their match fee for every over unbowled in the allotted time.

The same applies with World Test Championship points, with one point docked per missed over.

India, who have been losing finalists in both of the World Test Championship finals so far, have called up Avesh Khan to their squad for the second Test at Newlands.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan criticised India for what he described as "under-achieving" while commentating on Australia's win over Pakistan.

"When was the last time they won something?" he asked. "With all the talent they have, all the skillsets – they won here (in Australia) twice, magnificent. But the last few World Cups, they've been nowhere, T20 World Cups, nowhere."
