India v England: 2nd Test scorecard

Chennai (fourth day of five): India 329 & 286, England 134 & 164 - India won by 317 runs

India wrapped-up victory over England on day four of the second Test in Chennai to level the series at 1-1.

Virat Kohli's men completed victory shortly after lunch on the fourth afternoon much to the approval of the home support, after the tourists were dismissed for just 164 in their second innings.

Though England showed more fight than in their first innings it was not enough to prevent an Indian attack on a rapidly tiring pitch from earning constant breakthroughs and inflicting upon them their heaviest defeat in terms of runs in Asia.

Test debutant Axar Patel claimed 5-41 while Ravichandran Ashwin backed up his five-wicket haul and second innings century with three wickets of his own.

England skipper Joe Root showed some resolve with a dogged 33 but he was always fighting a losing battle.

Both sides now head to Ahmedabad for the concluding two Tests of the series - the first of which is a day-night pink ball game - on February 24-28 and March 4-8.

Much like the first Test the shape of the contest appeared set from the opening day.

Bar some brief success for the hosts in the morning session, Rohit Sharma stayed firmed and went to a seventh Test century with typically fluid innings on a pitch which showed sign of taking spin in the early stages.

Indeed, India's 329 looked like a significant effort and that was highlighted as England collapsed on day two.

The recalled Ben Foakes hit 42 but he was the only positive as the visitors were bowled out for just 134, allowing the home side a lead of 195.

Ashwin began his dominance of the contest with a 29th five-for but that was just the beginning for the 34-year-old.

Ravichandran Ashwin had a match to remember with bat and ball

England staged a brief counterattack on day three in an attempt to limit India's near-unassailable advantage but after their batsman had looked all at sea, the hosts were able to negotiate a surface fraught with challenges.

Kohli and Ashwin put on 94 in torrid conditions for the seventh wicket but better was to come for the latter, going to his fifth Test century to spark scenes of wild jubilation.

Set a world record 482 to win and asked to bat more than six sessions to save the match, England lost three second-innings wickets before the close on day three.

And India took the remaining seven required to complete victory either side of lunch - despite an entertaining cameo from Ali - to leave the series perfectly poised heading to Ahmedabad.
