New Zealand have been handed an injury worry days out from their trip to England with the news Henry Nicholls has suffered an injury.

Nicholls picked up the problem in his right calf during running drills in training at Mount Maunganui.

New Zealand are due to fly to the UK this weekend ahead of their three-Test series, which is scheduled to start at Lord's on June 2.

"He's having an MRI scan later today, so we'll know more after that as to the extent of it," head coach Gary Stead said.

"But he's got it strapped up and I guess the next 24 to 48 hours will give us an indication of how serious that is."

The Blackcaps have two warm-up matches scheduled for late May, with an enlarged squad of 20 set to be whittled down to 15 ahead of the first Test.

A number of Kiwi players will join the group at an as-yet unannounced date following their exertions in the Indian Premier League.
