The 74-year-old is believed to have contracted Covid-19 after travelling to the city from the UAE.
Abbas made 78 Test appearances for Pakistan between 1969 and 1985, scoring 5,062 runs at 44.79, and also played 62 ODIs, scoring a further 2,572 runs.
He also enjoyed a lengthy association with Gloucestershire, scoring over 16,000 first-class runs and over 7,000 List A runs for the county.
In retirement, Abbas enjoyed a brief career as an ICC match referee and also served as ICC president in 2015/16.
He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in August 2020.
