The series was on the line, but England, courtesy of Ben Stokes, managed to pull off the most incredible of wins at Headingley to keep England alive in the Ashes.
The innings from the allrounder not only reinvigorated the series, but the hope from the England camp is that it will serve as inspiration to go on and win the series as the sides head to Manchester for the fourth Tests.
The reaction from the opposite side has been one of regret and missed chances, with Marcus Harris and Tim Paine just two of the many who have expressed their views on where it all went wrong for Australia in that final hour at Leeds.
Now the sides move on to Old Trafford, where the extent of the scars of Leeds will be determined.
FIRST TEST: Edgbaston, Birmingham (Thursday, August 1 - Monday, August 5) - Australia won by 251 runs
SECOND TEST: Lord's, London (Wednesday, August 14 - Sunday, August 18) - Match drawn
THIRD TEST: Headingley, Leeds (Thursday, August 22 - Monday, August 26) - England won by one wicket
FOURTH TEST: Old Trafford, Manchester (Wednesday, September 4 - Sunday, September 8)
FIFTH TEST: Kia Oval, London (Thursday, September 12 - Monday, September 16)
Quite frankly, they have never been higher at any point during the series so far than they are right now.
Such optimism is due to the brilliance of Ben Stokes, and Jack Leach, to see England home in the most dramatic of fashion in Leeds, and they will hope the consequent lift the England camp received, and the low Australia suffered, has played into their hands for the two Tests left.
Jofra Archer's first innings heroics of 6-45 demonstrated that England may not miss James Anderson as much as they first feared, and his duel of words looks set to move back on the field if the Australian makes his expected return from concussion.

England will be wary that another repeat of their 67 all out in their first innings reply could well and truly close the door on victory in Manchester, but a reshuffle of the order and Stokes' performance could see his teammates raise their game.
Leach's role with the ball, after receiving further fame with the bat, could be enhanced given the traditional conditions on offer at Manchester and form part of a firing England bowling attack.
But there is a sense that England's Ashes destiny in the series will be decided by the batting as fortune will surely not favour them again so soon in such a similar manner.
Bookmakers Dafabet are narrowly backing England to take the lead for the first time in the series at Old Trafford. Joe Root's men are favourites at 7/5, while the tourists are available at 8/5. The draw is at 12/5.
England have named a 13-man squad for the fourth Ashes Test, but an enforced change due to James Anderson's ongoing calf issues has seen Craig Overton called up.
The news will come as a huge blow to the 37-year-old, who was targeting a return to the series on his home ground by getting through some overs for Lancashire's second XI last week after suffering the injury in the first Test at Edgbaston.
Whether Overton gets his chance remains to be seen, with Sam Curran also competing for a spot in the side to replace Lancashire seamer Anderson.
The other change for England comes in the form of position rather than personnel, with Joe Denly confirming on Monday that he will replace Jason Roy at the top of the order to partner Rory Burns, while the World Cup winner moves down to no.4.

Australia came to know the very definition of suffering defeat from the jaws of victory at Headingley, and it is the degree of impact that the third Test in Leeds will have that could well decide the series.
Captain Tim Paine will have been delighted to have seen Steve Smith return to the side for the tour match against Derbyshire last week after the 30-year-old recovered from concussion, and he should now return to the Test arena in Manchester.
There were pressing claims made in Derbyshire by members of the squad who are yet to make an appearance in the series, with fast bowler Mitchell Starc taking seven wickets in the match, while bowling allrounder Michael Neser also impressed by removing the hosts' top three in quick succession.
Mitchell Marsh top scored for Australia and also made some key contributions with the ball, while Marcus Harris and Usman Khawaja, who have both struggled in the Ashes so far, also made half-centuries.
Whether that will be enough to keep Harris in the side remains to be seen, with Cameron Bancroft, the man the left-hander replaced at Headingley, also scoring an unbeaten 36 against Derbyshire, while Alex Carey also featured.
Australia squad: Tim Paine (c, wk), Cameron Bancroft, Pat Cummins, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner

Similar to proceedings at Headingley, we could be looking at rain delays for at least the first half of the Test match in Manchester. Light showers are predicted throughout the afternoon on Wednesday, while there is also likely to be a significant delay in starting play on day three.
However, the final two days of the match should see some bright sunshine so we may have enough time for a result with day two also set to be dry.
The games will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Cricket (Sky 404, Virgin 504, TalkTalk 405) in the UK, while radio commentary will be provided by Test Match Special on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra (DAB, online via the BBC Sport website and through the BBC Sounds app).
The Cricketer's social media channels will have updates throughout the day, with reaction to follow via our website after play has concluded.
