The 22-year-old scored 179 runs off 257 balls, surpassing his previous Test high score of 171 which he scored on debut against West Indies last July, but several India batters failed to cash in on solid starts
Visakhapatnam (day one of five): India 336-6, England
Yashasvi Jaiswal posted a career-best Test score of 179 (257) not out as India closed on 336 for 6 on day one in Visakhapatnam.
The 22-year-old brought up his second Test century, and his first on home soil, in style with a six over long-on off Tom Hartley and later passed 150 (224 balls) with a four off Joe Root.

His previous best was 171, which he scored on debut against West Indies last July, and he will have his sights set on a double ton when he resumes alongside Ravichandran Ashwin (5) on day two.
India were circumspect during the first hour and lost Rohit Sharma early in their innings, the skipper turning a delivery from Shoaib Bashir straight into the hands of Ollie Pope at leg slip to hand the Somerset youngster his first Test wicket.

Jaiswal, however, grew into the game, taking on anything overpitched by spinners Hartley and Bashir and sharing productive partnerships with Shreyas Iyer, debutant Rajat Patidar, and Axar Patel.
Shubman Gill (34 off 46), Iyer (27 off 59) and Patidar (32 off 72) will, however, feel like they missed out on a good batting surface after making starts while Axar and KS Bharat threw away their wickets late in the day.

James Anderson was the pick of England's bowlers, removing Gill for the fifth time in Test cricket and conceding a miserly 30 runs from his 17 overs, while Bashir collected two wickets on debut.
India currently trail 1-0 in this five-match series after losing by 28 runs in Hyderabad.
