Dharamsala (day three of five): England 218 & 195, India 477 - India won by an innings and 64 runs

India underlined their dominance over England by securing an innings victory inside three days in the fifth Test in Dharamsala.

Ravichandran Ashwin marked his 100th Test with 5 for 77 as Ben Stokes' side were bowled out for 195 before tea, falling 64 short of making the home side bat again.

Jasprit Bumrah, standing in as captain for the injured Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja also got in on the act to help confirm a 4-1 series victory.

Joe Root top-scored with 84 but few of his countrymen showed any resilience.

James Anderson claimed his 700th Test wicket on the third morning, the first seamer to do so, but it was overshadowed by a dismal batting display with the Test on the line.

Shoaib Bashir completed his second five-for in his third Test as India were dismissed for 477 in their first innings.

But any momentum England built from taking the two wickets that remainder quickly evaporated. Ben Duckett (0) was bowled while marching down the pitch, Zak Crawley compiled a 16-ball duck and Ollie Pope picked out Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Jonny Bairstow launched a counterattack, launching three sixes - the first of which was the 100th of the series - off Ashwin to reduce the deficit but Kuldeep ended the bout of excitement.

Ben Stokes' (2) wretched tour with the bat continued as Ashwin picked up his fourth on the stroke of lunch and his fifth duly followed when Ben Foakes (8) threw his hands at a ball and missed.

Tom Hartley (20) and Mark Wood (0) followed in the space of three deliveries from an on-song Bumrah to all but end the argument.

Root continued unabated, however, bringing up a 61st Test fifty with a fifth four through fine leg; a rare moment of celebration for the away side.

He and Bashir (13) put on 48 for the ninth wicket but Jadeja bowled the Somerset spinner - who tried to review the delivery despite his off-stump being pegged back.

Root was in sight of three figures but with Anderson at the other end opted to go on the attack - only to give Kuldeep his 19th wicket of the series to begin the celebrations.
