Kohli ranks Edgbaston century as the second best of his Test career

India captain Virat Kohli celebrates his Edgbaston ton, left, and a century against Australia in Adelaide, right

Virat Kohli rates his Edgbaston century as his second best in Test cricket.

The India captain made 149 of his side's 274 in the first innings against England, marshalling the tail magnificently to steer the tourists away from a position of danger and towards near-parity.

It was a masterful display of control - the final two wickets added 92 of which Kohli's partners made just six - but not enough for the man himself to consider it his best ever.

Instead, Kohli says his 141 in the second innings against Australia in Adelaide in 2014 is his favourite.

"I am not sure [that Edgbaston is my best]. This could probably come in second to Adelaide," Kohli told bcci.tv.

Kohli rates his Adelaide 100 as the best of his Test career

"Adelaide still remains very special to me because it was second innings, and we were chasing a target. And I had total clarity that we are going for the target.

"Not once did I think that we are not. That was a beautiful zone to be in."

In that Adelaide Test in 2014, Kohli could not quite see his team to the line, as India fell 49 runs short of their target of 364.

Here, however, he may well have swung the match in the visitors' favour. Heading into lunch on day three, England had lost five wickets, three falling to Ravi Ashwin, to leave the home side in a precarious position.

Reflecting on his century before play on Friday, Kohli continued: "I am very happy ... [to have] this opportunity to help the team this way and pull us back in the Test match and compete.

"That is what we're here to do: we are here to compete, we are here to fight and we are going to keep doing that."
