India's cricketers are celebrating their first ever Test series victory in Australia after the fifth clash between the sides petered out to a draw in Sydney.

Australia had gone into day five with very little chance of drawing level in the series, after being bowled out for 300 in their first innings in reply to India's mammoth 622 for 7 declared.

Asked to follow on, the hosts reached 6 without loss in their second innings before the elements intervened.

Victories in the first Test at the Adelaide Oval and in the third at the MCG proved enough to secure series victory, with Virat Kohli's side retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as a result.

Australia's solitary win came in the second meeting of the teams at Optus Stadium in Perth.

"By far, this is my biggest achievement. It's at the top of the pile," India captain Kohli said.

"When we won the World Cup in 2011, I was the youngest member of the side. I saw people around me getting emotional, but I didn't feel what they felt.

"Having been to [Australia] for the third time now and to understand what we've achieved here has never been done before, we can be proud of it."
