Patel becomes the latest Indian import to county cricket and will join Durham for their final six matches of this summer's County Championship.

Axar will make the move to Chester-le-Street in mid-August and could make his debut against Glamorgan at the SWALEC.

The allrounder will also be available for three Championship fixtures at the Emirates Riverside, against Northamptonshire, Sussex and Middlesex, followed by trips to Leicester and Warwickshire.

Patel - who represents Gujarat - has taken 79 wickets in first-class cricket and hit 1,163 runs at 48.45, including one century.

The 24-year-old has played white-ball cricket for his country on 49 occasions - 38 ODIs and 11 IT20s - since making his debut in June 2014.

He is currently representing Kings XI Punjab in the IPL and his T20 performances see him placed in the top 30 of the Player Performance Index standings.
