Googly. Dilscoop. Flipper. Cow corner. Cricket is filled with words and phrases which, out of context, will mean very little to those without knowledge of our wonderful sport.

The Oxford English Dictionary, therefore, is calling on cricket fans to help them record the game's unique vocabulary and phraseology.

As part of a drive to catalogue the language of various hobbies around the country, the Dictionary's publishers are making a public appeal for example's of the cricket lexicon, so that they can be preserved forever, helping educate those who aren't involved in the sport.

"Words used by people when talking about a shared pastime can be little-known to outsiders, and are often interesting coinages with unique histories," a spokesperson said.

"Oxford English Dictionary editors have asked us to help by sending them words and phrases used by players and fans of the sport.

"Of particular interest are slang words and phrases (rather than technical terms) as these are much harder to trace in print and so are less likely to have come to the attention of dictionary editors."

The Cricketer is fully behind the plans.
