Gloucestershire have signed allrounder George Scott from Middlesex on a three-year deal.

The 23-year-old middle-order batsman, who also bowls right-arm seamers, moves to Bristol having spent four seasons at Lord’s.

He is not the first Middlesex player to take this path in recent times; Ethan Bamber spent two County Championship games on loan at Gloucestershire last season, while Ryan Higgins joined Richard Dawson’s side at the end of the 2017 season.

Higgins has gone on to establish himself as one of the most valuable players in county cricket; he made 958 runs and took 50 wickets in the 2019 campaign.

Scott, who possesses a similar skillset to Higgins, mentioned the example set by his former Middlesex teammate as among his reasons for the move.

He said: “I’m very excited, I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for me cricket-wise and I know Bristol is a lovely place.

“It seems like there is an incredibly family feel here. I’ve met a few of the guys and I know Higgo (Ryan Higgins) well and it feels like a really nice atmosphere at the club so I’m absolutely delighted to be joining.”

The majority of Scott’s first-team action at Middlesex came in the white-ball formats; he averaged upwards of 35 in both the Royal London One-Day Cup and the Vitality Blast this year.

Gloucestershire head coach Richard Dawson added: “He’s got huge potential as both a batter and bowler in all formats of the game.

“All the players and coaching staff are looking forward to him starting with us and we hope we can help him realise his potential in the years to come.”
