Bangladesh captain Shakib Al-Hasan has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee and given one demerit point for shouting at the umpire while batting during a T20 match against the West Indies on December 17.
The incident happened during Bangladesh’s innings when Shakib shouted at the umpire for failing to call a wide for a ball that the allrounder faced from Oshane Thomas.
The umpire appeared to indicate to the irate Shakib that the ball had brushed his shirt as he tried to pull it before it went past the leg stump.
An ICC statement released on Tuesday explained that “he first shouted at the umpire and then got involved in a prolonged discussion. After the end of the match, Shakib admitted the offence and accepted the sanction.”
This is the second demerit point that he has been given since the system was introduced in 2016. He received his first for an incident during a T20 match against Sri Lanka in March 2017.
Shakib top-scored for his side, managing 61 off 43 as they posted a low total of 129 runs, which the West Indies knocked off within 11 overs as they won the match by 8 wickets.
