The Omicron variant has led to several countries imposing travel restrictions on South Africa
The 2021 edition of the Mzansi Super League, which was scheduled to take place in February 2022, has been cancelled.
Cricket South Africa confirmed that the decision had been taken as a result of the current pandemic situation, "which has made it difficult to maintain the brand proposition of being the premium international T20 tournament".
The Omicron variant has led to several countries imposing travel restrictions on South Africa.
The previous instalment was also postponed because of Covid-19.
Like last year, the decision has been made to replace the flagship tournament with a domestic competition – the CSA T20 Challenge – which was won in February by Lions, who were captained by Temba Bavuma and also featured Kagiso Rabada and Rassie van der Dussen.
"The decision to cancel the 2021 edition of the MSL is meant to allow CSA and its strategic partners to revamp and review the tournament post-Covid-19 to regain its market and commercial position," said Pholetsi Moseki, Cricket South Africa's acting chief executive.
Paarl Rocks are the reigning champions, having beaten Tshwane Spartans comprehensively in the 2019 final.
