IPL confirmed for September 19 start in the United Arab Emirates

A meeting of the governing council has confirmed the dates for the 13th edition of the competition, with the women's tournament also confirmed

The 13th edition of the men's Indian Premier League will start on September 19 in the United Arab Emirates, tournament organisers have announced.

Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi will stage matches during the 53-day tournament. The final will take place on November 10 and there will be 10 afternoon matches, but the full fixture list has yet to be confirmed.

Changes to player regulations that could allow for individuals who test positive for COVID-19 to be replaced are currently under review.

Details surrounding bio-secure venues, as part of the standard operation procedures (SOPs) will also be published in due course.

This year's IPL was due to get underway on March 29 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It remains to be seen whether any of the big-money overseas additions - Pat Cummins became a record signing for Kolkata Knight Riders during the draft last December - will declare themselves available.

It will be just the second time the IPL has been entirely away from Indian shores, with South Africa having hosted the 2009 edition.

The UAE hosted matches during the 2014 event due to it taking place during the Indian general election.

Organisers of the 2020 competition are hopeful venues could be between 30%-50% full and have applied for government permission to allow fans into matches.

New Zealand and Sri Lanka also offered to host the IPL.

The women's IPL - named the T20 Challenge - will also be hosted in the UAE. As with 2019, three sides will compete - four had originally been intended to play - during playoff week in the men's tournament.
