HOPES OF A RESULT ALIVE WITH ENGLAND ON TOP
Any life left in the Compdog?
Once England had picked off the remaining Sri Lanka wickets, Nick Compton had no time to sit and ponder padded up in the dressing room. Alastair Cook’s knee injury saw Compton moved up the order and sent out to save his Test career for a second time.
There’s no doubt there’s fight left in the man, whether he is afforded another chance to show it remains to be seen. The Middlesex man has averaged just 12.75 in the series and a place in the side to face Pakistan seems unlikely.
Shot of the day…
Kusal Perera’s stand and deliver crunch down the ground off the bowling of Stuart Broad had the commentary box reminiscing of Sanath Jayasuriya’s ball striking capabilities. Fine praise for the 25 year old.
Broad was bound to be seething with the result, however he has just been made an MBE - which means he is mates with the Queen or something - every cloud.
Highs and lows…
Against Nuwan Pradeep, Joe Root went the way of Michael Vaughan in 05 with one that stayed unreasonably low.
James Vince elected to leave Pradeep’s following delivery which nipped back in and slammed into the top of off. The slope keeps you guessing.
Quote of the day…
“I remember Dominic Cork getting a hat-trick at Old Trafford… and that was it for the nineties!” – Josh Widdicombe on the highlights of English cricket in the nineties.
