Former India captain will take on the role with Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League

For the man known as 'The Wall' it seems an appropriate move.

Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid has signed up for a new team... a new football team. But he won't be pulling on a pair of boots any time soon.

Dravid has agreed a deal to become a 'celebrity ambassador' for Bengaluru FC ahead of their first season in the Indian Super League, which is due to kick-off later this week.

"It's great to be an ambassador for Bengaluru FC, a team who I have been tracking across the last four seasons," Dravid said.

"Also, the connect is instant, given I am a Bangalore boy. The way the city has responded to BFC has been tremendous and the club has some of the most passionate fans."

Bengaluru have only just been elevated into the ISL and Dravid, who posed for pictures in club colours on Tuesday, has high hopes for the team's future.

"The ISL will be a new chapter in the club's history and I'm looking forward to being part of it in my capacity with BFC," he said.

"It's been terrific to see the kind of progress BFC has made over the last four years. It's been one of the most professionally run teams and the kind of engagement they have been able to create with the fans and the people of this city has been really nice to see."

Bengaluru CEO Parth Jindal said: "Getting Rahul Dravid involved with Bengaluru FC is a huge honour for all of us.

"Being a true Bengalurian and a believer in youth, we can think of no one who imbibes the values and ethics of this club more than him.” 

Dravid is not the first cricketer to associate himself with teams in the Super League.

Sourav Ganguly is listed as a co-owner of Atletico Kolkata, MS Dhoni is associated with Chennaiyin FC, Virat Kohli is part of FC Goa and Sachin Tendulkar is part of the Kerala Blasters co-ownership.
