Rain wreaks havoc in Division One on day three

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE ROUNDUP: The weather reduced the action on the third day of top flight action, including a complete washout in the game between Sussex and Hampshire at Hove

Taunton (day three of four): Somerset 441-6 dec, Yorkshire 17-0 - Yorkshire trail by 424 runs with 10 wickets remaining

Somerset and Yorkshire were frustrated by the weather on the third day of the County Championship Division One match at Taunton.

Only 10.3 overs were possible because of persistent rain and, with the first two days, also having been badly affected, a draw now appears the only conceivable outcome.

Play started on time, and there was some entertaining cricket as Somerset looked to build quickly towards a declaration from their overnight first innings total of 391 for 6. They had added 50 to that total in half an hour when the rain set in.

There was a restart at 3.20pm, which saw Yorkshire post 17 without loss, but soon the players were forced off again and umpires Rob Bailey and Mark Newell called off play for the day at 4.10pm.

Kia Oval (day three of four): Surrey 246 & 276-2, Warwickshire 248 - Surrey lead by 274 runs with eight wickets remaining

Only 21.1 overs were possible on day three at the Kia Oval, but title favourites Surrey still used that time profitably to score 95 more second innings runs and boost their chances of being able to force a championship victory against Warwickshire.

Dodging the showers in the afternoon, in two mini-sessions, allowed Ben Foakes and Dan Lawrence to add an unbroken 57 for the third wicket as Surrey reached 276 for 2 – and a lead of 274 to take into the Division One game's final day.

Foakes batted beautifully for 41 not out from 66 balls, with six fours, while Lawrence drove Ethan Bamber majestically over extra cover for six and also struck three fours in an unbeaten 36-ball 29.

Earlier, in nine overs' play before the first rain of the day arrived at 11.09am, Ollie Pope went quickly from his overnight 56 to 78 before being bowled off an inside edge as he gave Michael Booth's fast-medium the charge and tried to hit him over mid off.

Hove (day three of four): Hampshire 226 & 173, Sussex 122 & 37-1 - Sussex require 241 runs to win with nine wickets remaining

Day three of Sussex's County Championship game against Hampshire at Hove was abandoned without a ball bowled - the first day's play to be lost this season.

Morning showers delayed the start to day three at the 1st Central County Ground, and when more persistent rain arrived at lunchtime, umpires Nigel Llong and Rob White called play off at 2.15pm with puddles forming on a saturated outfield.

Both teams will be hoping for an improvement in conditions tomorrow, with Sussex needing 241 runs and Hampshire nine wickets to claim a victory that would ease any fears both counties have of being dragged into a relegation battle.
