Jonny Bairstow has drawn level with Joe Root on the most Test centuries by an England batter in a calendar year after bringing up three figures for the sixth time in 2022.

Bairstow went to his second century of the match, the 11th of his international red-ball career, on day five of the fifth LV= Insurance Test against India at Edgbaston from 138 balls, with 12 fours and a six.

It is his sixth hundred against a fourth different opponent in the first seven months of the year.

He struck 113 against Australia in Sydney, 140 in the first West Indies Test in Antigua, 136 and 162 in memorable victories over New Zealand at Trent Bridge and Headingley and 106 in the first innings in Birmingham.

This latest landmark came as England chased 378 to complete their highest run-chase in Tests to secure a series draw against India.

Further honours beckon for the Yorkshireman before the end of the year. England face South Africa in three Tests in August and September before they return to Pakistan for three more after the T20 World Cup.

Now among 15 players in the history of Test cricket to have recorded half a dozen tons in a calendar year, he'll be eying joining the four who have done it on seven occasions.

Ricky Ponting, Sir Vivian Richards, Aravinda de Silva and Sachin Tendulkar were able to reach that particular landmark.

Leading the list is Mohammad Yousuf of Pakistan, who struck nine as part of the 1,788 runs he scored in 2006 - the most in a single year.
