Joe Root is England's new highest scorer across all formats after surpassing Sir Alastair Cook against India.
The 30-year-old went past the man he succeeded at Test skipper during day one of the first LV= Insurance Test at Trent Bridge.

He achieved the feat in his 290th match across all forms for England.
Cook had held the record for five years after going past Kevin Pietersen against Pakistan in 2016.
Root remains third in the list for most Test runs for England behind Cook and Graham Gooch, having gone past Geoffrey Boycott, Pietersen, David Gower and Alec Stewart during 2021.
